Think SPEED on a dog sled, then add one heaping dash of FARGO. In HORSES, three friends must cross the remote Northern Minnesota wilderness to prevent an illegal dumping of toxic waste.

2nd Place: Redemption's Run, by Jane Fredericksen (Mahtomedi MN)

After her mother's death, a 12-year-old girl sails Lake Superior to find the mysterious man who may be her father. She chases her dream; he's haunted by his. When a storm hits, each faces a terrifying choice: to confront a dream, or to lose one...forever.

3rd Place: Suicide Watch, by Gayla Betts (Normal IL)

Three years ago, the FBI defeated a deadly virus, but lost its top immunologist in the process. Now the virus is back with a nasty mutation, and only one man can unravel the twist -- if he will face his ruined reputation, a devious colleague, and the woman he left behind.

When the brutal slaying of his pregnant daughter-in-law forces a decorated cop out of retirement, he must confront a shameful secret from his past in order to decipher archaic clues left by the serial killer targeting his family.
